Eastern Medicines & Flowers

If you’ve ever seen a woman with a flower in her hair tucked behind her ear, chances are it was a hibiscus flower. Hibiscus flowers are popular in hot and humid climates like India, Haiti, and Hawaii. The Hibiscus is so prevalent in Hawaii that it is known as the “official state flower.” The predominance of Hibiscus in Hawaii is so evident that you will see it in almost every Hawaiian-based movie or television show.

But why do people love this flower so much – is there meaning and symbolism behind it?

The Meaning and Symbolism of the Hibiscus flower

The meaning and symbolism of the Hibiscus flower differ depending on which culture you are speaking from. It means something different now than it did thousands of years ago, and it means something different depending on where in the world you are today.

The Hibiscus Flower in Ancient Times

The symbolism of the Hibiscus flower dates way back to Ancient Egyptian times. Back in these times, the Hibiscus flower was seen as an Aphrodisiac. Many used to put it in their tea to help “get them in the mood.” The Hibiscus was associated so much with passion that unmarried women were not allowed to drink it!

Fast forward to the Victorian ages; giving someone a Hibiscus flower meant that you acknowledged their delicate beauty. What a difference a few centuries make!

The Hibiscus Flower Today

The flower still represents delicate beauty in many cultures today and is popularly seen as a sign of feminine beauty. The association with female prettiness is why women often wear it right above their ears. In Hawaii, which ear the flower is worn above can also signify relationship availability and status.

As mentioned, however, the exact meaning of the Hibiscus will differ from culture to culture. Because it is widely accepted as a sign of femininity and because women can nurture life, many cultures grow the Hibiscus flower as a symbol of honoring life.

In North America, the flower is generally seen as a symbol of the perfect wife. In China, however, it can be given to either a man or a woman to send a message of beauty, glory, and fame.

Hibiscus Colours:

While all varieties of Hibiscus generally represent feminine beauty, their colors take on their meanings.

  • The White Hibiscus represents purity and innocence.
  • The Yellow Hibiscus represents happiness, good luck, and fortune.
  • The Red Hibiscus represents love, romance, and passion.
  • The Purple Hibiscus represents royalty, class, knowledge, and wisdom.
  • The Pink Hibiscus represents friendship and love for family.

In conclusion, if you’re looking to bring some feminine beauty and energy into your home or garden, the Hibiscus flower is a perfect choice! Hibiscus flowers come in different colors, making them a great addition to any garden.
